WHAT IS IT?
Granite and other stones (such as marble and quartz) are porous materials. This means that they can absorb water and other liquids.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
You can perform a test to see if your granite needs to be sealed. If it does, one of our tile specialists from The Groutsmith can seal your granite as often as needed.
HERE’S AN EASY WAY TO SEE IF YOUR GRANITE OR OTHER STONE COUNTERTOPS NEED SEALING:
Pour some water onto your counter, then see how long it takes for the water to be absorbed...
0-10 MINUTES:
The more rapidly that absorption happens, the more sealant you will need. If absorption occurs right away, you’ll need to seal the stone several times a year; 4-5 minutes later, you’ll need multiple layers of sealant but only once every few years.
10-30 MINUTES:
One layer of sealant should tie you over for many years.
30+ MINUTES:
If it takes 30 minutes or there’s no absorption whatsoever, you don’t need to worry about sealing your granite. It’s still a good idea to check on your granite’s absorption levels every few years or so.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does natural stone sealing involve?
Natural stone sealing involves applying a protective sealant to granite, marble, quartz, and other stone surfaces to prevent liquids and stains from penetrating the porous material. In Northwest Florida, even decorative stone can absorb moisture if untreated. Professional sealing guards against staining and makes cleaning daily spills easier. Groutsmith evaluates stone condition and selects an appropriate sealant to maintain your surface’s beauty.
How do I know if my granite needs sealing?
A simple “water test” helps determine this: pour a small amount of water on the stone — if it absorbs quickly, sealing is needed; if it stays beaded up, the surface is likely well-sealed. This test can guide you on how often sealing is necessary to protect your stone. Regular testing every few years helps maintain optimal protection. Professional inspection ensures the right decision for your specific stone.
Does sealing change the look of my granite?
Sealing may slightly enhance the natural color and shine of your granite, but it doesn’t alter the overall appearance unless you choose a enhancing sealant intentionally. Most sealants are designed to protect while preserving the original look of your stone. Discuss your aesthetic goals with your technician so they can recommend the best option.
How long does granite sealing last?
The longevity of a granite seal can vary from a few years to longer, depending on stone type, usage, and environmental factors. Regular maintenance and testing help determine when it’s time to reseal. Groutsmith provides guidance during service on how to care for your sealed surfaces. Proper care extends protection and saves you from costly repairs.
Is natural stone sealing worth the cost?
Yes. Sealing prolongs the life of valuable stone surfaces, prevents costly stain removal, and preserves your investment. Without sealing, liquids can penetrate and permanently discolor stone, which is often expensive or impossible to reverse. Professional sealing pays off by keeping surfaces looking better longer and simplifying cleaning. It’s especially worthwhile for kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor stone.
